About Dorchester Choral Society.
Dorchester Choral Society
Dorchester Choral Society began 1959 as Dorchester Ladies' Choir. This became the West Walks Singers, conducted by Joan Brocklebank who was a key figure in the Dorset Guild of Singers. Subsequently, the choir has been conducted by Harvey Easton, Head of Music at Thomas Hardye School, and Dr. Richard Hall, Head of Dorset Rural Music School.

Twenty years later in 2001, Richard handed the baton to Christine Page, Senior Music Development Officer, Director of VOICEWORKS and Area Leader for SING UP as well as being a well known soloist.

Works performed recently include Haydn's Creation and Handel's Messiah, Along the Shore and Song of Solomon, (two new works by Peter Hope), Mozart Requiem, Brahm's German Requiem, Haydn's Marie Teresa Mass and Nelson Mass and Vivaldi's Gloria, John Rutter's Mass for the Children, Mozart's Mass in C Minor and Poulenc's Gloria and Bach's St. John Passion.

Other recent community events include: DCS and Thomas Hardye School Chapel Choir, the Imperial College Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Dickins in 2004 to sing Britten's War Requiem; Mass of the Children by John Rutter, performed with the Dorset Area Schools Partnership Choir of 50 young people; DCS and Band of the Royal Logistic Corps for a joint lighter concert of British folk songs, swing melodies and finishing with the proms bonanza of Rule Britannia. Dorchester Choral Society regularly joins together with other music makers and has two strong links with choirs in Europe; Lubbecke in Germany and L'Orpheon Choir from Bayeux, France. Exchange visits and concerts happen on a rotation basis.

The choir has very strong community links, singing in Dorchester Hospital at Christmas, with local schools choirs and working with young local soloists whenever possible. The choir rehearses every Monday evening in term time at The United Church in Dorchester from 7.30 to 9.15 p.m. Our concerts, usually 3 or 4, a year are nearly always at St. Mary's Church, Dorchester or The Village Hall at Charlton Down.
